About me

Registered Nurse.
Self-taught builder.

I'm a Registered Nurse and self-taught web developer based in San Francisco, with a career that spans clinical medicine, pharmaceutical research, and modern cloud infrastructure.

My nursing career took me from bedside care at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco to the front lines of clinical research at UCSF and California Pacific Medical Center. I entered research during the early 1990s HIV/AIDS crisis and went on to work across renal, cardiac, neurology, and gastroenterology — watching investigational drugs complete the journey from early-phase trials through to FDA approval.

I came to technology early — university coursework in Pascal, COBOL, and Fortran in the 1970s, then over a decade running ByteNet Online, a dial-up BBS community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Today I build and maintain production web properties using Cloudflare Workers and Pages, JAMstack architecture, Eleventy, and serverless workflows — all self-taught.

I bring to everything I do the discipline of a clinical background, the rigour of someone who has seen what it takes to bring a drug safely to market, and a belief that the best technology is built around the people who need it most.

Case study

Bringing a 1990s BBS back onto the modern internet

Reviving ByteNet Online meant more than restoring a login screen — it meant getting a Worldgroup BBS from the 1990s talking to today's internet mail infrastructure, in both directions.

Outbound
BBS server → relay software → hosted SMTP relay → the internet

The internet → a free-tier cloud VPS running Postfix → a private network tunnel → the BBS's own mail receiver

A few of the harder problems along the way:

  • A firewall rule buried below the usual OS-level tools was silently blocking mail traffic on the public-facing server — invisible to both the standard firewall manager and the cloud provider's own console.
  • A one-line change meant to clean up the mail server's domain configuration quietly stripped its permission to relay mail for that domain along with it.
  • Rejecting mail to nonexistent mailboxes outright, rather than generating a bounce for each one, to stay within a free relay service's monthly sending quota.
